Vehicle Listing Rules and Advertising Standards

The standards that apply to every private-seller and dealer vehicle advert submitted to the CarZoon automotive marketplace.

Operator CarZoon Automotive Ltd
Effective date 24 July 2026
Company number SC882384

Core standard: Every Advert must relate to a genuine, available vehicle and must be accurate, complete, lawful, current and capable of substantiation. Material information that could affect a buyer's decision must be presented clearly and prominently.

1. About these Rules

These Vehicle Listing Rules and Advertising Standards apply to every vehicle advert, stock upload, image, video, specification, price, promotion and related statement submitted to or displayed through carzoon.co.uk (an Advert).

They apply to Private Sellers, Dealers and anyone acting for them. They form part of the applicable Private Seller Terms or Dealer Terms. If another CarZoon term sets a stricter requirement, the stricter requirement applies.

These Rules support compliance with applicable UK consumer-protection and advertising law, including the unfair-commercial-practices provisions of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, the Consumer Rights Act 2015, the CAP Code and applicable financial-promotion rules. They do not replace an advertiser's own legal or regulatory duties.

2. CarZoon's marketplace role

CarZoon operates an automotive advertising and enquiry marketplace. Unless expressly agreed otherwise in writing, CarZoon does not own, inspect, buy or sell the advertised vehicles; act as the Seller's agent; receive the vehicle purchase price; provide escrow; arrange finance or insurance; or guarantee a vehicle, seller, buyer, enquiry, test drive, payment or transaction.

An Advert is information supplied by or for the identified Seller. CarZoon's review, data matching, label or publication is not a vehicle inspection, warranty, endorsement or verification of every statement. The advertiser remains responsible for the Advert and proposed sale.

3. Who may advertise

Private Sellers

A Private Seller must be at least 18, live in the United Kingdom, act wholly or mainly outside a trade or business, and advertise a vehicle located in the UK that they own or are clearly authorised to advertise. A person selling as part of a trade or business must not use a Private Seller Account.

Dealers

A Dealer must be a genuine motor trader or automotive business operating lawfully in the United Kingdom. It must use an approved Dealer Account, identify itself accurately as a trader, and maintain any licence, insurance, registration, permission or regulatory status required for its activity.

CarZoon may request evidence of identity, address, ownership, authority, trading status, company information, stock, business insurance or regulatory status. We may reclassify, restrict or suspend an Account where activity reasonably indicates the wrong Account type or an attempt to avoid Dealer obligations.

4. Eligible vehicles and authority to advertise

An advertiser may submit an Advert only where:

  • the vehicle exists and is genuinely available;
  • the advertiser owns it or has clear authority from the lawful owner;
  • the advertiser has the legal right and practical ability to sell it;
  • the vehicle is located where stated and can be inspected as described;
  • the vehicle type is supported by the current CarZoon service; and
  • the proposed Advert and sale are lawful.

CarZoon does not accept an Advert for a stolen, cloned, fictitious, unlawfully possessed or unauthorised vehicle; a Category A or Category B insurance write-off; a vehicle that must be destroyed; or a vehicle whose advertising or sale would be unlawful.

A Category S or Category N vehicle may be advertised only where CarZoon permits it and the correct category and relevant repair or damage history are disclosed clearly. A vehicle subject to outstanding finance may be advertised only where the advertiser lawfully may do so, discloses the position, and can provide satisfactory authority or settlement evidence when requested.

5. Accuracy and material information

Every statement, selection, specification and claim must be accurate, current, complete and capable of substantiation. An advertiser must not give false information or omit, hide, delay, minimise or ambiguously present material information likely to affect an average buyer's decision.

Material information may include price and mandatory fees, seller type, vehicle identity, mileage, age, specification, condition, known faults, accident or write-off history, import status, ownership or authority, outstanding finance, prior commercial use, MOT information, location, availability, warranty and any significant restriction on sale or use.

The Advert must describe the vehicle that the buyer will inspect and purchase. General wording, a disclaimer or an invitation to make further enquiries does not correct a false statement or excuse the omission of information that should have been given in the Advert.

6. Vehicle identity, specification and supplied data

The registration, VIN where requested, make, model, derivative, trim, first-registration date, body type, fuel type, transmission, colour, engine, powertrain, number of doors and other specifications must relate to the actual vehicle. Features and equipment may be selected only where they are fitted to that vehicle.

CarZoon may obtain information from DVLA, DVSA or another vehicle-data source. That information is a starting point and may be incomplete, delayed or incorrect. The advertiser must compare it with the actual vehicle and relevant documents, correct errors and notify CarZoon of a material conflict before publication.

CarZoon may keep a full registration or VIN privately for identity, moderation, fraud-prevention and service purposes while hiding or masking it on the public Advert. An advertiser must not defeat that protection by publishing a full VIN or an unnecessary image of a registration or identity document.

7. Mileage and vehicle history

The mileage must be the vehicle's current odometer reading at submission, stated in the correct unit and updated where a material change occurs. It must not be guessed, rounded to mislead, reduced, altered or described as verified without adequate evidence.

Any known or suspected mileage discrepancy, odometer replacement, conversion between miles and kilometres, gap in available records or other reason the displayed reading may not represent the vehicle's total mileage must be disclosed clearly and prominently.

Dealers must take reasonable steps to check mileage and supporting history. A general statement such as "mileage not warranted" or "mileage not guaranteed" must not be used as a substitute for reasonable checks or disclosure of a known concern.

A claim of full, partial, main-dealer or digital service history must be accurate and supported by the records available. Missing services, incomplete evidence or a known history gap must not be concealed.

8. Condition, damage, modifications and prior use

The stated condition must reflect the actual vehicle, having regard to its age, mileage, use and price. The advertiser must disclose known material mechanical, electrical, structural, safety, cosmetic or warning faults and must not describe a vehicle as fault-free, immaculate or in excellent condition where that description is not justified.

Known accident damage, insurance write-off category, significant repair, flood or fire damage, non-standard modification, import status and legal restriction must be disclosed where relevant. Material prior use—such as rental, taxi, private hire, driving-school, emergency-service or demonstrator use—must be stated where known and likely to affect a buyer's decision.

A modification affecting safety, insurance, emissions, performance, legality, warranty or value must be described accurately. The advertiser must not imply that a modification is approved, road legal or insurer accepted without reliable evidence.

9. MOT, roadworthiness, tax and emissions information

MOT status, expiry, advisory information, tax information, emissions, fuel economy, electric range, charging, Euro standard and ULEZ or other clean-air-zone claims must be accurate, current and based on an appropriate source. The advertiser must correct a known discrepancy.

Important: A valid MOT is not proof that a vehicle is currently roadworthy, fault-free or safe for every use. Any vehicle driven on a public road must be roadworthy, insured, taxed where required and driven by a properly licensed person.

If a vehicle is not roadworthy or cannot lawfully be driven, the advertiser must not present it as ready for road use. CarZoon may reject it or require a dedicated and prominent non-roadgoing or repair description where such advertising is expressly supported.

Vehicle tax does not transfer to a buyer. ULEZ, LEZ, clean-air-zone, emissions, tax and running-cost information can change and must not be presented as a permanent CarZoon guarantee.

10. Prices, mandatory charges and promotions

The Advert must show a genuine numeric asking price for the vehicle. A price must not be a token amount, deposit-only figure, monthly-payment figure, unavailable "from" price or other amount that gives a misleading impression of the total cost.

Where a Dealer advertises to consumers, the headline price must include VAT and every unavoidable mandatory fee, charge or payment the buyer must incur to purchase the vehicle, unless the law clearly permits another presentation. A genuinely optional product or service must be identified as optional and must not be preselected or presented as compulsory.

Delivery, warranty, preparation, administration, documentation, inspection and similar charges must not be separated from the headline price where they are unavoidable. VAT status, including a VAT-qualifying claim, must be stated accurately. A Dealer using a second-hand margin scheme must not suggest that separately recoverable VAT is available where it is not.

A discount, "was/now" price, saving, price comparison, limited-time offer or scarcity claim must be genuine, current and supported by evidence. An advertiser must not create false urgency, invent a previous price or advertise unavailable stock to attract enquiries for another vehicle.

11. Finance, insurance, warranties and regulated claims

Private Sellers must not promote credit, finance, insurance or warranty products through an Advert unless CarZoon has expressly enabled the feature and all legal and regulatory requirements are satisfied.

A Dealer must not submit or cause CarZoon to communicate a financial promotion unless it is lawful and the Dealer is appropriately authorised, exempt or has obtained any approval required by law. The Dealer must provide requested FCA status, firm-reference, lender, broker, approving firm, representative-example and supporting information before publication.

A finance communication must be fair, clear and not misleading. A monthly payment must not be shown without the required context, which may include deposit, amount of credit, term, number and amount of payments, APR, interest rate, total amount payable, final or balloon payment, mileage limits, fees, eligibility and required risk warnings.

A warranty claim must identify the provider, duration and material limits accurately. A commercial warranty is additional to a consumer's legal rights and must not be described in a way that removes or reduces those rights. CarZoon may withhold or remove finance, insurance, warranty or regulatory wording until satisfactory evidence is supplied.

12. Photographs and video

Images and video must be recent, clear, lawful and representative of the actual vehicle and its present condition. The primary gallery must show the actual vehicle being advertised, including enough exterior and interior views to give a fair impression.

Material visible damage must not be hidden by framing, lighting, filters, retouching, generative editing, overlays or omission. Editing may be used for ordinary crop, rotation, exposure or privacy protection only where it does not change the apparent vehicle, specification or condition.

Stock, library or manufacturer images must not be presented as photographs of a used vehicle. CarZoon may permit a supplementary illustrative image only where it is lawful, expressly approved and prominently labelled, and where actual-vehicle condition photographs remain the main gallery.

Media must not contain unrelated people, visible personal documents, unlawful material, misleading price overlays, payment instructions, QR codes, third-party marketplace watermarks or content the advertiser has no right to use. CarZoon may crop, resize, format or remove media to apply these standards and protect privacy.

13. Descriptions, contact information and intellectual property

A description must be vehicle-specific, professional and understandable. It must not use keyword stuffing, unrelated search terms, excessive capital letters or punctuation, fake reviews, unsubstantiated superlatives, abusive language or discriminatory conditions.

Do not include passwords, verification codes, bank or payment details, unnecessary personal information, unlawful external links or instructions intended to bypass CarZoon safety and enquiry controls. Contact details must be supplied through the designated Account and contact fields unless CarZoon expressly permits another format.

The advertiser must own or have permission to use every description, photograph, video, logo and other item submitted. Content must not infringe copyright, trade marks, privacy, data-protection or other rights. Copying another Seller's Advert or scraping a third-party marketplace is prohibited.

14. Prohibited Adverts and advertising practices

An advertiser must not submit, publish or maintain:

  • a fake, speculative, duplicate, bait, unavailable or already-sold vehicle;
  • a vehicle the advertiser does not own or have authority to advertise;
  • a stolen, cloned, unlawfully possessed or legally prohibited vehicle;
  • a Category A or Category B write-off or vehicle required to be destroyed;
  • false or misleading identity, mileage, condition, history or specification;
  • misleading images, altered evidence or stock images presented as actual;
  • hidden mandatory fees, token prices or misleading monthly-only prices;
  • false discounts, endorsements, reviews, scarcity or time-pressure claims;
  • claims that a badge, MOT or CarZoon review guarantees vehicle quality;
  • finance, insurance, warranty or investment content that is unauthorised, unapproved or otherwise non-compliant;
  • for a Dealer, wording such as "sold as seen", "trade sale", "no refunds" or "no warranty" where used to misstate or remove a consumer's legal rights;
  • instructions to make unsafe, anonymous, untraceable or unusual payments, or a false claim that money should be sent to CarZoon;
  • malware, phishing, spam, unlawful, abusive or discriminatory content;
  • personal or confidential information published without lawful authority;
  • content infringing intellectual-property or privacy rights; or
  • anything that breaches law, another CarZoon policy or user safety.

15. Additional standards for Dealers

A Dealer must:

  • clearly identify itself as a motor trader and keep its details current;
  • ensure stock feeds, CSV imports and agency uploads meet these Rules;
  • make reasonable checks before making mileage and history claims;
  • disclose material facts and trader status before a buyer is committed;
  • comply with applicable consumer, advertising, vehicle, product-safety, data-protection, tax and regulatory requirements;
  • ensure any price, finance, warranty, part-exchange or promotion is properly authorised and presented;
  • keep evidence supporting claims for a reasonable period;
  • update stock promptly when reserved, sold or no longer available; and
  • remain responsible for employees, contractors, stock-feed suppliers and agencies acting through or for its Account.

Dealer approval or a Verified Dealer or Founding Dealer Partner badge does not remove the Dealer's responsibilities for vehicle quality, description, pricing, statutory rights, finance, warranty, deposits, delivery, aftersales or complaints.

16. Additional standards for Private Sellers

A Private Seller must advertise only in a private capacity and must not use a Private Seller Account for regular trading, business stock or a vehicle being sold for commercial purposes. CarZoon may consider volume, frequency, ownership, Account links and other relevant information when reviewing possible trade activity.

During the applicable three-calendar-month Free Period, a Private Seller may have no more than three Active Adverts at one time. Pending Review, Live, Reserved and Paused Adverts occupy an active slot. Sold, Withdrawn and Expired Adverts do not.

A Private Seller must not claim to offer Dealer services, regulated finance, a commercial warranty or consumer rights that do not apply. They must accurately disclose known vehicle defects and must not misrepresent their identity, ownership or authority.

17. Advert review, evidence and moderation

New Adverts enter Pending Review and are not public until approved. CarZoon may use automated checks, data comparisons and human moderation before or after publication.

We may ask for reasonable evidence, including identity or authority, ownership records, vehicle documents, additional photographs, mileage or service records, repair evidence, finance settlement or authority, business details, FCA status, warranty documents or claim substantiation. Sensitive information should be supplied only through the method CarZoon specifies and may be redacted where appropriate.

We may correct formatting, request changes, approve, reject, unpublish, pause, restrict, downgrade or remove an Advert. Where appropriate, we will explain a remediable issue and allow a reasonable correction opportunity. We may act immediately where necessary for legal compliance, fraud prevention, security or user safety.

Approval is not a guarantee. CarZoon does not inspect every vehicle or independently verify every statement. The advertiser remains responsible for accuracy and must continue checking the Advert throughout its life.

18. Advert status, editing and lifecycle

Status Public? Meaning
Draft No Saved but not submitted for review.
Pending Review No Awaiting approval, evidence or requested changes.
Live Yes Approved and visible. A Private Seller Live Period is 30 days.
Reserved Yes, labelled Reserved Visible while a genuine prospective sale progresses.
Paused No Temporarily hidden; may remain subject to plan or slot limits.
Expired No Advertising period ended; reactivate or mark sold.
Sold or Withdrawn No Closed and no longer available to buyers.

A previously approved Paused or Expired Advert may return to Live without another review where it has not been materially changed. A change to vehicle identity, seller type, ownership, price, mileage, location, condition, history, finance, warranty, media or another material fact may return the Advert to Pending Review.

A Private Seller's 30-day Live Period starts only when the Advert is approved and published. At expiry, it is removed from public search and must be reactivated or marked Sold. Dealer Advert availability and capacity are subject to the Dealer's active Plan and Account status.

19. Seller labels, badges, Featured status and ranking

CarZoon controls all platform labels and badges. A Private Seller or Dealer label describes the approved Account type. A Verified Dealer label means CarZoon completed the checks selected for that programme at the relevant time. A Founding Dealer Partner badge identifies a Dealer registered during the Launch Period ending at 23:59:59 UK time on 31 August 2026 and subsequently approved, subject to the Dealer Terms.

Featured, Highlighted Ad or another promotional marker indicates a visibility service, not a quality assessment. No label, badge, review, data match or promotion is a vehicle warranty, inspection, guarantee of seller conduct, or promise of ranking, views, enquiries or sale.

Advertisers must not imitate, alter, upload or misuse a CarZoon badge, verification mark, review, safety label or regulatory statement. CarZoon may correct or remove any label and may withdraw a badge where its conditions no longer apply.

20. Keeping an Advert accurate and available

The advertiser must review the Advert regularly and promptly correct, pause or close it when price, mileage, condition, location, availability or another material fact changes.

  • Use Reserved only for a genuine active prospective sale.
  • Use Pause when the Advert should be temporarily hidden.
  • Use Mark Sold promptly when the vehicle has sold.
  • Use Withdraw when the vehicle is no longer being advertised.
  • Do not create a duplicate Advert instead of updating the existing one.

CarZoon may contact the advertiser, request confirmation, expire stale content, or pause an Advert that appears unavailable, materially outdated or unanswered. An advertiser must respond truthfully and within any reasonable deadline stated.

21. Vehicle checks, viewings and transactions

Buyers should independently inspect the vehicle and verify identity, ownership, finance, mileage, MOT, service and accident history, condition, documents, keys, seller status and payment arrangements before proceeding. Sellers and Dealers must allow reasonable checks and answer questions honestly.

The buyer and Seller arrange any viewing, test drive, deposit, part-exchange, finance, warranty, delivery, payment and sale directly. They are responsible for insurance, driving entitlement, roadworthiness, documents, DVLA notifications, payment security and suitable records.

Never represent that CarZoon holds the vehicle purchase price, guarantees the transaction or requires payment to a particular account unless CarZoon has expressly introduced that service under separate written terms. Suspicious payment requests should be reported before money or vehicle possession is transferred.

22. Reporting an Advert or challenging a decision

If you believe an Advert is inaccurate, fraudulent, unsafe, unlawful, unavailable or otherwise breaches these Rules, use the available Report this advert control or contact support@carzoon.co.uk. Provide the Advert link or reference and a clear explanation. Do not publish sensitive evidence in a public field.

An advertiser who receives a Changes Required, rejection or removal decision may respond through the stated route with corrections or relevant evidence. CarZoon may maintain a decision where the Advert remains non-compliant or where publication would create legal, safety, fraud, security or reputational risk.

A service complaint is handled under the Complaints Handling Policy. A moderation challenge does not require CarZoon to keep an Advert public while it is reviewed.

23. Enforcement

Where CarZoon reasonably believes an Advert or Account breaches these Rules, another CarZoon policy or applicable law, we may:

  • request evidence, clarification or correction;
  • change formatting or remove a prohibited element;
  • reject, unpublish, pause, restrict, downgrade or remove an Advert;
  • remove Featured status, a badge or another platform marker;
  • block duplicate or replacement Adverts;
  • restrict submission, messaging, promotion or Account features;
  • place an Account under review or require Dealer registration;
  • temporarily suspend or permanently close an Account;
  • preserve and disclose information where lawfully required; and
  • refer suspected crime, safety or regulatory matters to an appropriate body.

We will act proportionately where practicable, but may act immediately and without advance notice where necessary for law, fraud prevention, security, user safety or preservation of evidence. Serious or repeated breaches may affect eligibility for refunds in accordance with the Refund and Cancellation Policy.

24. Changes and contact

We may update these Rules to reflect changes in law, regulatory guidance, advertising standards, CarZoon services or marketplace risk. The current version and effective date will be published on this page. Material changes may also be notified through the website, Account or email where appropriate.
